Frederick Sherman

Frederick George Sherman, PhD, 92, of Independence, MO, passed away Friday, December 14, 2007 at Rosewood Health Center. Memorial Services will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16, 2007 at The Fountains. Cremation with private entombment at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The Groves or The Fountains Holiday Fund. Fred was born April 16, 1915 in MacGregor, MI to William and Mary (McCullough) Sherman. He was graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1933 before attending Tulsa University graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Sherman then received his PhD in Physiology from Northwestern University. Fred married Barbara Tenney on August 7, 1942. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was trained as a Gunner. He was instrumental in the developing and testing of thermal clothing for the military. Dr. Sherman started his teaching profession at Washington University. He taught at Brown University from 1946 until 1960. Fred was Chairman of the Biology Department at Syracuse University from 1960 until his retirement in 1982. Dr. Sherman was a researcher at Woods Hole, MA; Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden; Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, NY; and the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. Dr. Sherman is survived by his wife Maxine (Keir) Roper Sherman with whom he shared the last ten happy years; children Susan Treffeisen and husband Rick, Martha Sherman and husband Alexander Ratensky, Sarah “Sally” Friedman and husband Peter, Mont K. Roper, Michael O. Roper; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara in 1997.
