Herbert Eldon Zucca Herbert Eldon Zucca, Born December 7, 1928 in Kansas City, MO to Martin & Olive Zucca. A graduate of Northeast High school in Kansas City, MO, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 202. He worked as a troop committeeman in Boy Scout Troop 206, where his two sons were members. He joined the Navy Submarines in 1945 and served on the USS Sea Cat and the USS Diodon. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1947. He joined the Army Reserves in 1948 and served in the Headquarters Company 406 Infantry Regiment. In 1968 he transferred to the 418th Civil Affairs Company and served on several maneuvers in Germany. He retired with honors in December 1988 as First Sergeant. He received two Meritorious Service; one Army Accommodation, and three Army Achievement awards. He worked for GM Leeds from 1953 and retired after 34 years of service in 1989. Active in politics in Independence he served as County Committeeman in Blue Township for 4 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 340 for 50 years. He and his wife, Opal, were foster parents from 1972 to 2012 and cared for 433 children during that time. He enjoyed helping people and often took food to several widows and helped with things they could not do. He also worked with the Foster Families distribution center. He died August 24, 2012 surrounded by family at his Independence home. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Opal Zucca and his children, Tim and wife Cassie (Sugar Creek), Wyatt and wife Crystal (Lake Tapawingo), Marta (Excelsior Springs), Colette and husband Chuck (Liberty), and Keisha (Liberty). He also leaves behind 12 Grandchildren, and 8 Great-Grandchildren. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the Maywood Baptist Church 10505 E. Winner Rd. Independence, MO 64052. Burial will follow in Brooking Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday night, August 29, 2012 at Maywood Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to New Covenant Ministries of Independence, 532 Main Street, Independence, MO 64050.
