Lloyd B. Hurshman, 84, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Thursday, 23 Apr 2015 at home in Independence, Missouri. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 2nd at Stone Church; 1012 W Lexington Ave, Independence, MO. A visitation will follow the service until 12:00 p.m., at the church. Lloyd was born 20 May 1930 to Bernard Francis Hurshman and Anna Lurene (Laughlin) Hurshman in Independence, Missouri. He married Jean Lenore Amsberry on 1 Jun 1951. He married Phyllis (Emerson) Shields on 12 Jul 1997. He was preceded in death by daughter Linda Kay Thatcher in 1989 and wife Jean in 1997. He leaves three children: Becky Lee Savage and husband Greg, Lu Rene Tyree and husband Larry, Alma Bruce Hurshman and wife Carla (Talcott); four step-children: Katherine Rose Goheen and husband Jon, Andrew Michael Shields and wife Kristy, Jonathan Shields, and Mary Shields and fiancé Kevin DuBois; five grandchildren: Kimberly, Tena, Kathryn, Matthew, Jessica, Christopher and Steve; five step-grandchildren: Charlotte, Savannah, Michael, Madelynne and Hayden, and five great grandchildren, Kaylin, Lauren, Elijah, Oliver and Arthur. A native of Independence, Lloyd graduated from William Chrisman High School. He was selected and attended the American Legion Boys State of Missouri and was an Eagle Scout and scoutmaster. He earned a B.A. in religion from Graceland College where he received the Gold Seal for Scholarship and a Masters of Divinity from St. Paul School of Theology where he graduated with honors. A lifelong student, he also studied at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Portland (Oregon) State College, and Ohio State University. He was a member of Lambda Delta Sigma, Alpha Phi Omega and the International Thespian Society. His special interests included music, dramatics, camping, scouting, Christian theology, Latter Day Saints beliefs and history, and church administration. Lloyd wrote often and co-authored the book, Many Will Respond. He was a gifted teacher and orator. Before entering full-time church appointment, Lloyd was employed in the field of business and was, for a year, a physical education instructor and director of activities at Colegio Americano in Guatemala, Central America. While living in Guatemala City, Lloyd and Jean’s twin daughters, Becky and Linda were born. Lloyd was ordained to the priesthood in 1951. He began full-time ministerial work for Community of Christ in 1961. He was ordained an elder in 1957, a seventy in 1964, a high priest in 1967, and an Apostle in 1974. Lloyd was assigned as missionary to the Columbia River District (Oregon/ Washington) (1962-1964). He served the Alaska District (1965-1967) and was Administrator of the Upper Ohio Valley Region (1967-1972) where he championed pioneering youth camping programs in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Lloyd was Director of the Division of Administrative Services (1972-1976) and was a member of the Council of Twelve Apostles, the leading missionary quorum of the church from 1974 to 1988, serving as quorum secretary from 1984 to 1988. His domestic assignments included: West Central States, Northern Plains and Prairie Provinces, North Central, South Central States, and Southwest Regions, Utah Missionary District, and Des Moines, Omaha-Council Bluffs, Lamoni, and Tulsa Stakes. His international assignments included parts of Canada and the Latin American Region. Lloyd’s final position was as pastor of the Stone Church in Independence, Missouri. Lloyd retired from full-time ministry in 1991. He spent his time with many projects and his large family.
