Dr. Nicholas Dopuch

Olin Emeritus Professor Nicholas Dopuch, a transformational figure in the world of accounting research who past deans credit with profoundly elevating the business school’s profile, died on Sunday, February 4, 2018. He was 88. He was born Nov. 15, 1929, in St. Louis, the son of Marko and Mary Tribulak Dopuch. He served in the Strategic Air Command, U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Dr. Dopuch joined Olin in 1983 as the Hubert C. and Dorothy R. Moog Professor of Accounting and is widely regarded as a key impetus for raising the bar on academic research from the business school. Before coming to Olin, he was a professor and editor or co-editor of the Journal of Accounting Research at the University of Chicago. He directed Olin’s PhD program from 1986 through 2003, and continued as editor or co-editor of the Journal of Accounting Research while he was on Olin’s faculty until 2001, retiring from that post after 34 years. In 2001, Dr. Dopuch was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame and received the Washington University Distinguished Faculty Award on Founders Day in 2004. Beyond his influence on accounting research, former colleagues and students recall Dr. Dopuch as a tough but caring professor who challenged his colleagues and students to challenge themselves. Dr. Dopuch was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Scholl Dopuch; two sons, Nicholas E. Dopuch, Sr. and Michael Dopuch and a brother, Stephen Dopuch; he is survived by a grandson, Nicholas E. Dopuch, Jr. (Ariana Moffett); sister-in-law Ellen Dopuch; two nephews, Stephan and Andrew Dopuch; two nieces Amy Meyer and Terry Sass; caregiver, Libby Fink and many friends and colleagues. Funeral service Mon., Feb. 12, 11:00 am at Glendale Presbyterian Church, 500 N. Sappington Rd., Glendale. Interment St. Paul’s Churchyard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Glendale Presbyterian Church, Washington University Dopuch Accounting Research Conference at Olin Business School or Shriners.
