Kent Wilton Obituary

Kent Roger Wilton, age 76, passed away peacefully on August 15 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn (nee Hays); son Gregory (Jennifer Steinbruegge) Wilton; grandchildren, Ewan and Elijah Burns-Wilton and Fiona Wilton; and brother Doug (Jeanne Althoff) Wilton. Kent attended Webster Groves High School where his favorite activity was singing in the Acapella Choir. His love of this music carried into his adult years and he sang many years in the Alumni Vespers Choir. He earned a B.A. degree from Depauw University and an MBA from Washington University. Kent met his future wife Marilyn in junior high school, and they eventually married in 1969 after reconnecting following college. Kent served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant during the Vietnam War from 1969-1971. He served as a Vietnam advisor in the Mekong Delta and was awarded the Bronze Star and other honors during his service there. Kent had a fulfilling career as a Systems Engineer with IBM and later in sales with Lexmark, Inc.. After retiring, he enjoyed his ‘fun’ job as a wine consultant for Madinger Wines, later Garland Wines, and built his own wine cellar. Kent was an enthusiastic member of the community, serving in multiple roles at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Alumni Vespers Choir, Genealogy Society, Saturday Night Dance Club, and his neighborhood association. Kent was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and loyal friend. He was generous, thoughtful, and witty, always ready with a quick pun and a good joke. He was enthusiastic about his interests which were many. Kent enjoyed golfing, camping, fishing, logging, woodworking, genealogy, music, Cardinals baseball, computers, crossword puzzles, dancing, cooking, and fine wine. He was a John Wayne fan and a collector of John Wayne movies. Kent also loved to travel, and he and Marilyn enjoyed many wonderful trips together. We are most grateful for the wonderful care he received at Provision Living at West County and for the faithful companionship of his good friend during his illness. Visitation is at Bopp Chapel (10610 Manchester Rd.) on Friday, August 23, 5-7 p.m., and the memorial service is at Grace Episcopal Church, Kirkwood (514 Argonne E Dr.) on Saturday, August 24, 2 p.m. with reception following. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Grace Episcopal Church, Kirkwood.
