Leonard Powell Obituary

Powell, Leonard Jack Jr. “Jack” (August 24, 1957-November 1, 2019). Jack passed away in his sleep on November 1, 2019 of natural causes. His sudden departure has left a devastating void, but his love and spirit survives in the hearts and minds of his beloved family and friends. Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years Julie (née Howell), treasured daughters Zoë and Ava; brothers Thomas Powell (Janet) and Richard Powell; sister Susan Powell Andresen (Thomas); sister-in-law Lisa Pontious Powell; nieces Julie Powell Kyle, Jennifer Powell, Ashley Powell Hansen (Benjamin), Melissa Andresen, Kaitlyn Andresen Cassity (Christopher), Tianna Andresen, Rachel Powell, Erin Powell, Riley Powell, Delaney Powell, Vera Powell; nephews Max Andresen, Deonte Andresen, and Sam Andresen. Preceding Jack are his parents Leonard Jack Powell Sr. and Virginia Mankawich Powell, and brother David Powell. Never has a husband, father, brother, uncle and friend been more cherished, and never will one be so sorely missed. Jack lived his life the way he loved---with all his heart, with all his strength, with all his passion. Beneath the “Happy Jack”, “Party Jack”, “Crazy Jack” demeanor frequently displayed lay the heart and soul of a kind, gentle, compassionate, generous warrior. He saw no boundaries in what he could achieve, in what he could share, in what he could enjoy. “Go Big or Go Home”, “Work Hard, Play Hard”. His charismatic charm ensured he knew no strangers, and everyone he met felt they were valued and included in his circle. Many lay claim to being his “best friend” because to Jack, they all were! Jack always expected the best, and gave the best. He was the first-born of his loving parents, and as such, he always felt it was his duty to be a leader in all endeavors. He was an idolized big brother, all-conference Arlington Heights High School (class of 1975) and Millikin University football player (class of 1979), distinguished and award-winning 37-year career Orthopedic Sales Professional, “Leader of his Pack” at home, “Life of the Party” in his social circle. His desire to exceed expectations made him a force to be reckoned with in all areas of his life. Working hard was what he did, loving hard was who he was. With all his successes, his greatest blessings came in the form of his two beautiful daughters, Zoë (now 19), and Ava (now 14). With his “little gifts from God”, he found himself in uncharted waters, but it was clear that this natural born captain was up to the duty of being Admiral. His wisdom, his guidance, his adventurous and fun-loving spirit will live on in his girls as they continue to navigate the course he outlined. His “orders” have been heard, loud and clear. Jack always viewed the river and his river friends as his paradise, always a constant source of joy. Heard many times was “never leave a good time for what might be a good time.” It’s certain he has only left for what is sure to be a good time…his newly discovered paradise in heaven. Visitation will be held November 5 from 4:00-6:00 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
