Sarah Tucker Obituary

Sarah Jane Tucker, age 94, passed away peacefully in the sunroom of her home, surrounded by family on the morning of Wednesday, October 4th, 2017. She was born in Crawford, Nebraska to the late Roy and Minnie Curtis on July 19, 1923. Sarah had four sisters: Cody, Betty, Ollie, and Midge. Sarah married George Aschwege in 1941. During their marriage, they had eight children-four boys and four girls. Following their divorce in 1970, she finished raising her children as a single Mom. Sarah was the ultimate domestic diva. She grew a giant garden each year to feed her family. She canned and preserved the bounty, and always had extra to share with others. Sarah was a fantastic cook. She could prepare anything from scratch. She was well known for her homemade cinnamon rolls, chocolate peanut butter bars, and many other delicious treats. Children and grandchildren could always expect a delectable home baked treat waiting when they visited her home. In addition, grandchildren were always delighted by her extensive pig collection, which included several giant piggy banks in which they could place coins. Relatives and friends gifted her pig-themed knick-knacks, figurines, planters, and more over the years. By the time of her death, her collection numbered almost a thousand. Grandchildren delighted in trying to count the exact number when they dropped by Sarah’s home. Sarah later met the love of her life, Irving Tucker, on a blind date. The two married in 1981, and remained married until the time of Irving’s death in 2001. Irving was skilled in carpentry and shared Sarah’s love for gardening. They spent much of their free time planting and harvesting an enormous garden together. A few years after Irving’s death, Sarah sold the home they had shared in Reeds Spring, MO and moved to the beautiful, wooded property of her daughter, Denise Todd, & son-in-law, Eddie Todd, in Highlandville, MO. Eddie, with the assistance of Denise’s son, Anthony McGlothlin, constructed a 2 bedroom home specifically designed for Sarah. From the time she moved into her new home in 2004, until her passing in 2017, Sarah loved her little home on the “mountain top”. She spent her days surrounded by plants & wildlife. Visitors marveled over the beauty of the landscape and how perfectly the home fit Sarah's personality & needs. This arrangement also allowed Sarah to remain at home as living independently became difficult. Denise was able to offer the care she needed in the home she loved. Her daughter-in-law, Billie Aschwege, granddaughter, Stacey Bartholomew, & great granddaughter, Annaleis McGlothlin provided respite care, while enjoying the added benefit of extra time spent with Sarah. Sarah was a petite, spunky woman whose smile could light up the entire room. Even in her last days, she was sharp-minded and witty. She knew when to give advice, and when to stay silent. She would often say, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” She was a treasure trove of wisdom. She brought joy to family, friends, and most everyone she ever met. She will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, her husband Irving, and her son, Allen Aschwege. She is survived by seven children: Denise Todd, Carol Paulsen, Kim Gibbs, Kay Cherry, Bruce Aschwege, Mark Aschwege, and Lane Aschwege. In addition to her children, Sarah had 24 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren to love and honor her memory. Flowers may be sent to White Chapel Memorial Gardens, 5234 West State Highway EE, Springfield, MO, 65802.
