Devin Lee Michaelis Obituary

On February 28th we lost our beloved Son Devin Lee Michaelis due to complications of colorectal cancer. Devin(e) was born April 27, 1980 to Denny and Diana (Steinhauser) Michaelis. From his early childhood at the McMouse House to his final days as a paraeducator at Yellowstone Academy at Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch (YBGR) Devin fully embraced every person and experience in his life's journey. Devin graduated from Billings West High School in 1998. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. His career path included swimming lessons at YMCA, lifeguarding at Lake Elmo, sales at Target, night manager at The Soup Place, and part-time bartender at the Crystal Lounge.

Devin was a paraeducator at Yellowstone Academy for the past eleven years. It is during this time he found his true passion and love: working with youth who struggle socially, emotionally and behaviorally. Devin's passions in life included camping, rafting fishing, throwing a 20 in the keno machine, shoe shopping, going to the cabin, live music, hippie dancing, Friday nights at Grandma's, social gatherings, driving O' Dona and traveling.

When asked how to describe Devin, friends and family used the following words: he truly

believed in karma; he was loyal, had a zest and love for life, and he loved family and friends. Devin was known for "doing it his way" and giving the best hugs. He was brave, genuine, thoughtful, forgiving, inspiring, and loved the Seahawks, MSU Bobcats and Notre Dame.

It is befitting that the culmination of his life was spending his last weekend with family and lifelong friends at the place he called "magical" Chico Hot Springs.

Devin lived life to the fullest. His bravery, optimism and love will be part of his legacy and those of us who love him will be forever grateful for sharing in his beautiful life.

He leaves behind his parents, brother Dustin (Elke), fiance Jennica Hammond, grandmother Mary Steinhauser, aunts and uncles Kathy & Gary Hankel and Deb & Tom Dorsey, cousins Travis (Kathleen) and Tommy Dorsey, as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather HR (Dick) Steinhauser and paternal grandparents Harry and Donna Michaelis.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday March 7th at St Pius X at 717 18th Street West, Billings. Memorials may be made to YBGR, 2050 Overland Dr. Billings, MT 59108 Yellowstone foundation.org
