“Your choice for a Voice” Jon Metcalf lost his battle with ALS peacefully at home. He is now on his Harley riding in Heaven, as well as hunting and fishing to his heart’s content, keeping an eye on us all.

Jonathan (Jon) Metcalf, 60, passed away on December 9, 2016 at his home, in Boyd, Montana. He was born on April 3, 1956 in Bloomington, Illinois to Kenneth and Dorothy (Schafer) Metcalf.

Jon was an active outdoorsman early on, through his involvement with the Boy Scouts. He successfully earned his Eagle Scout and worked many summers as a counselor/leader to many boys that came to the Boy Scout camps from the big city of Chicago. Upon graduating from Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, Illinois in 1974, Jon came out to Montana and attended The University of Montana in Missoula, Montana where he received a degree in Forestry and Economics. He worked in Food Services in order to pay his way. During his time at UM he had many adventures catering events and music concerts. His stories of meeting Charlie Daniels and others have entertained us all. After graduating from UM he had a variety of jobs, driving truck in the oil fields, raising sheep, moving irrigation pipe, pouring concrete, swinging hammer and building homes. His favorite job was working with wood and building “one of a kind” cabinets and furniture.

Jon moved to Red Lodge, Montana in 1984 and began with the company building the club house on the golf course. This lead to many years in the construction industry. During that time he raised three beautiful children: Sierra, Marshall, and Tyler. In order to stay involved with his children Jon volunteered to be an umpire and announcer. This allowed him to use that wonderful strong voice, that we have all have come to know and love.

When he wasn’t working he was announcing calling ball games, announcing ski jouring, helping at fund raisers, auctions, and parades. He loved to hold that microphone and talk, he was so very good at that. He met his lovely wife Katie at one of those auctions. They were instantly a couple. Simply put they were puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together. They were married in 2009. Jon included Katie’s daughters (Hailey(adopted by Jon in 2011) and Kristan) into his family. All five children along with Katie and Jon had many fun and exciting adventures, hunting, fishing, and camping. We never went hungry because he made the “Best in the West” burgers accompanied by fresh vegetables from the garden cultivated with his “green thumb”.

In 2007 Jon moved to a little house in Boyd, Montana. Here he and Katie built and opened his own shop, Metcalf Construction, in 2011. Most people had known him in the building industry and continued to call on him for work and special projects. His beautiful work and attention to detail will live on in so many homes in Carbon county alone.

Jon spent a good portion of his life in “God’s church”, the great outdoors. Jon loved to hunt, hike and fish covering countless miles as he walked, climbed and boated through Montana. This is

where he was most at peace with himself and life in general. There was never a “bad day” hunting or fishing.

Jon loved to ride his Harley Road King. He and Katie took many trips through Yellowstone, the highways of Montana, Idaho, South Dakota and even up to Canada just for the “perfect” ride.

Jon is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn (Katie) Callahan, adopted daughter, Hailey Metcalf, and (step-daughter) Kristan Apodaca (James Preshinger) - Boyd, Montana. Susan Metcalf,- former wife, Red Lodge, Montana and mother to his children, Sierra Canfield (Corey) - Billings, Montana, Marshall Metcalf - Butte, Montana, Tyler Metcalf, - Red Lodge, Montana. His mother, Dorothy Metcalf - Lexington, South Carolina, His brothers - Larry (Rhea) Metcalf - Columbia, South Carolina, Tom (Rhonda)Metcalf - Birmingham, Alabama, Phillip Metcalf - Glendale, Oregon. His nieces, nephew, many cousins, and friends that loved him. Jon was preceded in death by his father Kenneth L. Metcalf.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be announced, where we will enjoy and share stories while listening to some of Jon’s favorite music (Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix). Black clothing will only be allowed if it says “Harley Davidson”. The Black and Orange of Harley, Tie Dye, Camo, Red, White and Blue were Jon’s favorite colors.
