Obituary for Karl Detlev Makarowski

Beloved and devoted husband, Karl D. Makarowski, 69 of Columbus, NJ, left his earthly abode peacefully on Saturday, 17 Sep 16 at 6:44 p.m. Forever the family man, he was surrounded by his loving wife, Delini Sharon, his “Lil Sis”, Sonia, nephew, Andrew and niece, Aneela at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.
Born on 21 Feb 1947 in Dusseldorf, Germany and adopted by Olga Rosen and Nicholas Makarowski, he grew up in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and Los Angeles, CA where he attended St. Catherine’s Military Academy, St. John’s Bosco High School followed by earning his BA and MA Degrees at University of Southern California where he surfed the waves along the California coast. A US Army Veteran with over 38 years of Active Duty Service, Karl continued his commitment to God and Country as a civilian with an Army Reserve Command until his passing.
His passion in life was selfless service, family, brining others together, travelling and surfing. He is an inspiration to others: Calm, cool, collective, even when hurting, he taught others to love unselfishly- without any conditions but only to be loved and respected in return. Adventurous, fearsome and thirsty to explore our beautiful earth, he made lifelong connections with those whose spirit touched him through his travels. Forever a Soldier, he continued with the recruiting efforts during his time in the hospital (☺)
A fighter to the end, Karl soldiered on throughout his physical challenges with incredible strength, dignity and unfailing love and concern for others even while he was the fighting leukemia.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Delini S. Sooklall-Makarowski; adored brother-in-law of Roni, Sonia and Andy; beloved uncle of Christina, Danielle, Andrew, Aneela and Anand. Also survived by two sons (Heinrich and Karl Manuel), daughter Ashly and grandson, Dominick.
