George L. Edson Obituary

George L. Edson, 65, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Morristown and Eastampton, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at home, surrounded by the love of his family after a lengthy battle with cancer. George was born in Puerto Rico to the late Kenneth and Kum Hi “Ruth” Edson (nee Young). Being a member of a military family, he was raised in Puerto Rico, Germany, and New Jersey. He spent most of his youth in Wrightstown and attended Bordentown Regional High School. He earned a BA in Political Science from Dickinson College and obtained his Juris Doctor Degree in Law from Loyola College. After college, George had a successful career as a criminal attorney where he set up his practice in Wrightstown and Philadelphia. Later in his career he pursued other interests including the start-up of Nilsen Detection Agency and RexPlex Sports Complex, both based in Elizabeth, NJ. He found his true passion in elder care when he was hired as the Executive Director for Sunrise Assisted Living properties in the Morris County area. In 2006 he was awarded the Executive Director of the year award at Sunrise for his accomplishments in turning Brighton Gardens of Florham Park, NJ around to being the top US property for Sunrise. George was a man of many talents outside of his professional career. He was on the track team where he broke records for throwing the javelin. George also sang and was selected to join the All Nation Choir. He sang a solo in Carnegie Hall and toured throughout Europe singing for the Queen of England and Pope. He also sang in the White House when President Nixon signed the 26th amendment. He loved to play in poker tournaments, primarily for the enjoyment of meeting other players and was known among his friends for his arm wrestling and softball skills. He was an extreme dog lover and enjoyed attending the Westminster Dog Show to watch his Bichon Frise Junior compete this past February and his beloved Bichon Boomer compete in 2008 at Madison Square Garden. George also loved children and taught Sunday school for many years. George was a member of the Park Avenue Club of Florham Park, NJ and the Harbour Club of Charleston, SC. He also was a member of the Pt Pleasant Elks, Freemason and member of Colonial Prospect Lodge #24 of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of New Jersey, as well as past President of the Wrightstown Rotary Club. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Clinton. Surviving is his beloved wife Janice Geiges-Edson of 16 years, his son Matthew Edson and wife Jenna (Eastampton), daughter Kimberly Edson (Marlton), daughter Amy Brundage and husband Matthew (Haddon Township), and sister Ethel Edson (Wrightstown). Services are private. A celebration of George’s life will be scheduled at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
