William Turner

WILLIAM G. TURNER, World War II Veteran William George Turner, 88 of Mooresville, NC passed away on March 21, 2010. Born in Keansburg, NJ, he was the son of the late Mayor and Mrs. William Turner, Jr. He was a graduate of High High High Middletown High School, NJ and RCA Institute in New York City. William worked for Western Electric until enlisting in the Army in 1941 right after Pearl Harbor. He served in the European Theater with pride and considered it an honor to have served his country during the war. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. William began 32 years of Government service at Fort Monmouth, NJ with the US Army Satellite Communications Agency. He was one of a select group of individuals responsible for the successful launching of the first Communications Satellite on December 18, 1958. He also made significant contributions to many other satellite programs. His imaginative and innovative application of communications skills led to the success of several Presidential Communications Support projects. He received recognition from the White House for his efforts and also received many other awards for his dedicated service. He was an expert in radio technology and in 1942 was honored with life membership in The Society of Wireless Pioneers. He enjoyed his time communicating with fellow amateur radio enthusiasts around the world, and also with many US Space Shuttle astronauts during space flights. William was predeceased by his infant son William, Jr., and wife Henrietta. He is survived by his children Lynn Turner, Sun City, AZ, Lana Radel, Lakewood, NJ, William H. Turner & wife Debbie, Wayne Turner & wife Janice, Nina Rubino & husband Michael, Mooresville, NC, 2 sisters, Phyllis Riehs, Brick, NJ and Gail DeNoon, Lynchburg, VA, 7 grandchildren, Edward Letwenski, Leah Oneto, Michael, Matthew, and Kelsie Rubino, and JT and Maggie Turner, and 3 great-grandchildren, Emma, Tommy, and Cassidy Oneto. A memorial service will be held on April 8, 2010 from 3-5pm at the Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals 233 Carr Ave. Keansburg. Letters of condolences can be sent to www.jacquelinemryanfh.com
