Joan Young

Joan Barclay Lindholm Young, 84, of Lavallette, NJ died on Thursday November 29, 2018 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey from complications resulting from heart surgery. Born in New York City, she traveled extensively before settling in Hackettstown, New Jersey where, along with her late husband Norman E. Young, raised their three children. She lived in Flanders, NJ and Cancun, Mexico before moving fulltime to her beloved home in Lavallette, NJ, where she spent every summer from her childhood through her passing. Joan had a variety of interests including travel, reading, crossword puzzles and walking the boardwalk. She was a member of the Lavallette Yacht Club since 1975 and a member of the Board of Directors for Mt. Olive Public Library. She was a staunch advocate for protecting the environment and animal rights. Her independent spirit forged a path not often available to women of her generation. This path included working at the FBI, traveling as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines and working as an assistant to the famous photographer O. Winston Link. After raising her children, Joan established her own business, Skylands Appraisal Services of Flanders, NJ. Upon retirement, Joan spent the winter months at her home in Cancun, Mexico where she had many friends and wonderful years. Her kind and generous spirit will be missed by her surviving children Kevin Young of Normandy Beach, NJ, Timothy Young of Columbia, NJ and Susan Young of Easton, MD; her daughters-in-law Margarie Young and Mary Young; her grandchildren Isabella, Keely, Marra, Emily Rose and Ian Young, Nicholas, Katherine and Alexander DiMeo and her great grandchild Aria; her long time companion, Pat Gorman as well as countless friends. She had a warm and loving relationship with Pat’s children in Atlanta, Georgia, Patty, Beth, Chuck, Nancy and Carol, with whom she enjoyed visiting and who were always kind and gracious. There will be a celebration of Joan’s extraordinary life on January 6th at the home of Kevin and Margarie Young in Normandy Beach, NJ between 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to a cause dear to Joan’s heart: wildlife preservation and environmental protection.
