Anthony Mansolino Obituary

Anthony Mansolino, Jr., 87, of Mays Landing, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2019, at AtlantiCare Medical Center. He was the son of the late Anthony and Natalie Mansolino. Tony was born and raised in Plainfield, NJ, and graduated from Plainfield High School. Upon graduation, Tony served as a patrolman for the Plainfield Police Department. A long-time baseball player and fan, he was invited by the New York Yankees to try out in Yankee Stadium, where they told him to gain some weight and they would offer him a contract. Tony decided to enlist in the Navy instead. He was a Petty Officer Third Class and baker on the USS Molala from 1951-1955. While in the service, Tony played on the naval service baseball team with and against many Major League stars, including Ted Williams. Tony was a decorated serviceman, receiving the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and two Korean Service Medals. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Tony relocated to Southern California, where he served as a detective in the Compton Police Department. In 1965 he met his wife Julie, and they were married in 1966. They moved back to Plainfield in 1969, where he worked with his brother Bobby in his cabinet business. He then became a Loss Prevention Specialist with Wakefern Food Corporation. He retired to Mays Landing in 2003. He was an avid baseball fan and while in California was a Long Beach All-Star Little League coach. Several of his players later graduated to the Major Leagues. Tony followed whichever teams his son Doug or grandson Tony were affiliated with and would check box scores daily. Tony also enjoyed golf, frequently joining his friends on the links. As a younger man, he enjoyed hunting and would go on yearly trips with his father and brothers to the Pennsylvania woods. In more recent years, he would relocate the many squirrels that would recklessly dare to venture into his backyard. At last count, the total was well over 350. Most recently, Tony was happy to join his grandchildren on their vacations. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He is survived by Julie, his wife of 53 years; his brother Bob (Barbara); his sons Doug (Cindy), Bob (Min Ja), and Anthony; his daughters Sara (Robert) and Gina (Jim); his grandchildren Nick, Tony (Adrianna), Loren, Heather, Ariana, Tyler, Jake, and Kacie; his great-grandchildren Jackson and Maddox; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service with military honors will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2019, 11:30 AM, at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor at the Pavilion, where we will gather to honor Tony’s life. In keeping with Tony’s “style”, no neckties, please! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
