Anthony Martone

Anthony “Tony” Martone , 92, passed away peacefully at the Veteran’s Memorial Home in Vineland New Jersey on Friday, August 26, 2016. Anthony was born in Jersey City in 1924, one of nine children born to Harry and Susan Martone. He lived most of his life in neighboring Kearny, before moving to southern New Jersey in his 80’s. As a young man Anthony joined the Army and was stationed in Italy where he proudly served his country in World War II. He made his living as a builder/contractor and was extremely talented in his trade, building 100’s of homes from the ground up, in the North Jersey area , working well into his 70’s. He had many other talents which included sketching unique art work in pen flawlessly, carving stone sculptures by hand, particularly horses which he had a love for and was an avid gardner and landscaper. Other pastimes he greatly enjoyed were going to the Meadowlands Track and socializing with his cronies at Sal’s Italian Social Club on Midland Avenue in Kearny. Predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Martone and two of his children, Eileen Procopio and Anthony Martone, Jr. , one sister and seven brothers. Anthony is survived by his daughters Elizabeth Martone, Dorothy Horn and her husband Russ, and Ann Marie Martone-Lawson, grandchildren ; Rose Marie Crenshaw, Katy & Harry Martone, Anthony Galladay, Nicole & Ryan Lawson and great-grandchildren; Da’jah Lomax, Gabriella Crenshaw and Giavanna Worthington, his brother Paul Martone and many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Wednesday August 31, from 10am to 11am at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 5021 Harding Highway, Mays Landing, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am. Interment immediately following at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing, NJ.
