East, Carolyn Emma (nee Hess), 91, of Mays Landing, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City. She was born September 29, 1916 in Atlantic City, the daughter of Lewis V. and Flora (Schaffer) Hess. She moved to Pleasantville with her family when she was three years old where she attended the Decatur Avenue School and Pleasantville High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked in the Hosiery Mill in Pleasantville. Carolyn was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution under ancestor Joseph Estell. She was also a member of the Township of Hamilton Historical Society (Founding Member), a past member of the Township Republican Club, past member of the Laureldale Fire House Auxiliary, and a Den Mother for Cub Scouts (Pleasantville), and Assistant Leader for Girls Scouts (Laureldale). She was pre-deceased by her husband Thomas "Cliff" East; daughter Viola Baker and son-in-law Robert Baker of Mays Landing; sons Thomas East, Jr. (Kentucky) and Robert East (Mays Landing. She was also pre-deceased by her sister Viola (Jim) Kinsey (Burlington, NJ) and brothers George (Dolly), and Raymond (Lillian) Hess. Seven children survive her: Lewis (Candy) Pennsville; Raymond (Janice) Mays Landing; Bill (Kathy) Mays Landing; George (Mimi) of Laureldale, David (Peggy) Arizona, Dottie (Ted) Kinsey Mays Landing; and Betty (Dick) Krick of Laureldale. 32 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren also survive her. She is also survived by her brother Lewis Hess and sister-in-laws Lillian Hess, Margaret East, and Blanche Burke; brother-in-laws Dick (Violet) and Dave (Helen) East; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her. A viewing will be held on Monday 1-3PM, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing where services will be held at 3 PM. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Mays Landing.
