David Lacy Obituary

David Lloyd Lacy (Dave) died on May 18th 2019, surrounded by his family. Dave was born to Mark Leeds Lacy Jr. and Mary (Mitchell) Lacy in Atlantic City. He was predeceased by his brother Mark, sister Irene as well as his wife Jean to whom he was married for 49 years. He will be greatly missed by his beloved daughters, Susan (Michael) Lazarchick, Sandi (Chuck) Cole, as well as his grandchildren Chuck (Rachael) Cole, Laura (Matt) Barnard and Aron Lazarchick and his great grandchildren Ellie and Jackson Barnard – all of whom he loved dearly, as well as other family and friends, nieces and nephews. Dave worked for 36 years for New Jersey Bell and always had stories to tell about his work and his buddies, many who he had life long friendships with. He often spoke of installing the first phones in homes in the local area, and working behind the scenes in the old classic hotels of Atlantic City and Boardwalk Hall. Dave was very proud of his and his ancestor’s history. His family was very involved with the early years of the Atlantic City Police Department and the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department. Ancestor Charles Lacy’s Civil War Unit - the 3rd NJ Cavalry was bodyguard for Gen. U.S. Grant, and he was one of the founders of what would become the Atlantic City Electric Company. Ancestor Rev. Hosea Joslin built a church at Sugar Hill, the Mays Landing waterfront, and was honored with a stained glass window at the United Methodist Church of Mays Landing. Dr. Boto Otto was an army surgeon for Gen. George Washington. Dave was also a direct descendant of the Leeds family and the Jersey Devil! His stories and our memories include many wonderful times with family, fun (both before and when they lived on the Great Egg Harbor River) cook outs, boating, river rat racing, water skiing, marveling at son-in-law Chuck’s latest Night of Lights creation, “epic” monopoly board games, Parcheesi and croquet with family. He was in a flying club in the 70’s and spent many hours flying with his brother-in-law, George Kurtz. As youngsters, Susan and Sandi enjoyed weekly outings to the Morning Glory Club at the AC Racetrack with dad. He often told the story of being enticed to try golf by his son-in-law Michael when his 12-year-old grandson Aron was also going to play for the first time. He fell in love with golf, fully enjoyed playing in Scramble to benefit Fire Companies with his son in laws and Chuck’s stepfather Bill and hosted several winter golf weeks at his Florida home just for the guys. With new golfers, he often told people that he’d only been playing for a year. Dave was a dear, caring, thoughtful man; He took care of his wife and became her caregiver when she became ill. He was a great brother to Mark, always keeping tabs on him through his illnesses. He was always smiling and bringing laughter into the conversation, which was a gift, He was pleasant and sincere, though always little bit, well maybe a lot of a jokester. We will miss him terribly. ‘Death leaves a heartache nothing will heal. Love leaves sweet memories that no one can steal.’ "Love given is never lost." Family and friends are invited to celebrate his memory on Thursday, May 23 from 10-11:30 am at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 11:30. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Mays Landing. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First United Methodist Church of Mays Landing, 6011 Main Street Mays Landing, NJ 08330, where Dave was an active member and a trustee. If you want to send flowers, the family requests that you use Colonial Flowers (David’s nephew’s business), 311 N. High St., Millville, NJ. 856-825-7576.
