Edward W. Battschinger, 83 – of Mays Landing, NJ passed away on December 20, 2012 at home with his family at his side. Born and raised in Newark, NJ Edward served his country proudly in the US Army during the occupation of Japan and again in the Korean War. He was a 25-year Newark Police Officer until his retirement in 1980. Ed and his loving wife, Kathleen resided in Atlantic Highlands, NJ for over 25 years where they raised their four children and made lifelong friends. Together they achieved their dream of living in Maine when they built their retirement home on the shore of Toddy Pond in Surry where they lived for ten years hosting many visits from their children, grandchildren and friends. Ed’s family was truly his life’s joy. He will forever be the greatest Pop Pop and friend to his nine adoring grandchildren whose presence brought him great happiness and comfort through the difficult days of his illness Ed is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Kathleen (McMullin) and his four children; Glenn Battschinger, Mays Landing, NJ; Kathleen O’Connor, Belchertown, MA; Lynn Battschinger, Mays Landing, NJ; and Heidi McDonough (Mark), Egg Harbor Township, NJ; nine grandchildren, Erin, Dillon, Morgan, Gregory, Cedric, Agnes, Seamus, Ava and Eliza; sister, Barbara; several nieces and nephews and many good friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 24, 11 AM at the Church of St. Katharine Drexel, 6075 West Jersey Ave., Egg Harbor Twp., where friends may gather and celebrate his memory from 10 AM until the time of the Mass. Burial will be in the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Ed’s memory woundedwarriorproject.org.
