Edward McGonigal Obituary

Ed McGonigal, 91, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and formerly of Mays Landing, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 1, 2010, with family by his side. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II and served with the Fifth Air Force Command in the Pacific. Shortly before his enlistment he met Shirley O'Hey, the love of his life, whom he married in 1943. Upon conclusion of his military service he settled with his wife in Brigantine and began their family. Ed worked as an adjuster for several local insurance companies. In the early 1950's the young family moved to a home on Lake Lenape in Mays Landing where they raised six children and Ed started his own public adjusting business. Ed and Shirley truly enjoyed life. They had many wonderful friends. Some living close by and others they met on their travels around the world to Central America, Europe, China, Australia, New Guinea and other destinations. In addition to travel, you could always find Ed reading, especially on the subjects of history and geography. He always loved aviation and maintained his private pilot's license as long as he was able. Ed was married for 60 years until Shirley passed in 2003. Shortly thereafter, Ed moved to The Palms of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, where he made many great new friends and was cared for by his daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, Bill. If you were fortunate enough to spend time with Ed, you would have an earful of great stories of his travels, his adventurous life, and the infamous Big Cake. He was quick-witted and full of life. Ed is pre-deceased by his parents William and Julia, sisters Regina and Julia, brothers Brud and Robert, and his wife Shirley. He is survived by his sister, Mary Graham of Philadelphia; six children; Sandy (Dennis) Mellish, Stephen, Rick (Valarie), Nancy (Bill) Ripley, Michelle (Josh) Billig, and Barry (Beth); loving grandchildren Corinne, Christopher, Ben, Michael, Morgan, Maggie, Maya and Elizabeth, and special great-grandchildren Tegan, Dylann, and Dominic. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, 11 AM, at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a hospice organization or the charity of one's choice to commemorate Ed's life.
