George Dirkes

Dirkes, George Robert "Bob", 76, of Weymouth, passed away on June 19, 2007 at home with his family. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of the six children of William Charles and Mable Amy (Taylor) Dirkes. He spent his childhood in Woodhaven, NY and Allenton, RI, then moved to Pleasant Grove, NJ and graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1948. He married his wife Betty in 1950 and eventually settled in Bellmaur, NJ. He has been a resident of Weymouth since 1969. Bob worked for his brother Chet at Nassau Electric in Audubon; he later joined Local 102 IBEW, where he worked on building the Lindenwold Hi-Speed Line, the Salem Nuclear Power Plant, and the Deptford Mall. He was able to fulfill a boyhood dream of owning a junkyard. In 1969 he established Dirkes Garage in Weymouth, where he lived and worked doing what he loved most in life. Bob was a New Jersey District Forest Fire Warden for over 30 years until retiring in 2001, where he drove Fire Truck C-18 and operated Tractor MU306. He is the beloved husband of 56 years to Elizabeth (nee: Rose); loving father of G. Robert, Jr. and his wife Rosemarie and Ronald W. and his wife Eileen, all of Weymouth; dear grandfather of Tracy Dirkes of Mays Landing, G. Robert Dirkes III ("Robbie"), Timothy Dirkes, and Katie Dirkes all of Weymouth, Rachel Dirkes of Concord, NC, and Jeffrey Dirkes and Colleen Dirkes, both of Weymouth; devoted great-grandfather of Lilly Rose Dirkes of Weymouth; loving uncle of Denise Dolan of Weymouth, Cindy Turner and Christine Rose, both of NY; dear brother of Ruth Perrine of Hackettstown and sister-in-law Fran Dirkes of Egg harbor Township and the late Chester, Douglas, Albert, and Mary Salisbury. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Viewings will be held Monday 6:30-9 PM and Tuesday 11 AM - 12 Noon,at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 12 Noon. Burial will be in the Weymouth United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the AtlantiCare Hospice, P.O.
