Mason, Helen Ruth (nee Levy), age 85, of Somers Point, passed away on July 28, 2007 at Our Lady's Residence in Pleasantville. A former resident of Ruskin, Florida, she was born in Chicago, Illinois, on New Year’s Eve 1921, to Jacob and Edith (Wheeler) Levy who thought they’d be dancing all that night. Growing up in the then “wilds” of west Florida, Helen attended schools in Ruskin and Wimauma where she learned to love reading, to enjoy grits and tomato gravy, and to look out for rattlesnakes and scorpions. Helen came north to Atlantic City at age 16 and worked at the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel and F.W. Woolworth store on the A.C. Boardwalk as well as at the Hollywood movie theatre. She was pre-deceased by her husband Harry Mason who died in 1976 and also by her sister Evelyn Matthews and brother Robert Eng. Helen is survived by her son, Fred J. Mason (Amy Shelton) of Mays Landing, her daughter, Patricia Barron (Edward) of Egg Harbor Township, her sister, Margaret Denney of Florida, and grandchildren Edward Barron III (Paula), Colleen Haricksin (Mark), Scott Barron (Amy) and Katherine Beck. She has many cousins, nieces and nephews in Florida. Helen was “Binny” to her great-grand-children Kira Barron, Dylan Haracksin and Lauren Angelina Barron who will cherish her memory. Arrangements are by Boakes Funeral Home of Mays Landing. Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery in Bargaintown. Relatives and friends are invited to visit a yard sale, a thrift shop or a flea market and shop a bit in Helen’s memory.
