Horace Bennett

With his wife Oleta and family nearby, Horace D. Bennett, Jr. (87) of Absecon, NJ, passed peacefully on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center in Pomona, NJ. He was born on February 21, 1927 in Lenape at Radley Run, Chester County, PA. Horace lived his childhood years on a farm in the Brandywine Valley region. Along with his family he worked the farms where he lived, while getting his education through his graduation from Scotts Senior High School with the class of 1945. Horace served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in January, 1950. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and the WWII, Victory Medal. After his high school graduation and military service Horace relocated to the Atlantic City, NJ area to work in a family business with Brandenberger Steel, Inc. Horace is survived by his wife, Oleta (Goodman) Bennett. Together they enjoyed a long and happy marriage of 63 years. Horace is also survived by his sister Jenny B. (Bennett) Reid of Coatesville, PA; brother Clifford A. Bennett and his wife Betty, of West Grove, PA; and sister-in-law Lois (Goodman) Stockton, of Northfield, NJ; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Horace D. Bennett, Sr. and Elsie (Brandenberger) Bennett; and his brother Edwin L. Bennett. Horace very much enjoyed his home with his wife, Oleta. His loved ones will remember him for his avid enjoyment for gardening, his beautiful roses and azaleas, and meticulous lawn. Horace’s family will never forget his genuine kindness, coupled with an everlasting calm demeanor and love for us all. A viewing will be held on Thursday, December 18 from 10 AM – 12 Noon at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will begin at 12 Noon. Burial will follow at Laurel Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounder Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or online at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
