Hugh Herron Obituary

Hugh J. Herron died on May 9, 2016 at the age of 77. Predeceased by his father and mother, Cornelius and Mary, his two beloved Aunts, Annie and Nellie, two brothers, four sisters, and his child Matthew. He is survived by his wife Elaine, children John (Eve), Christine, Michael (Diane) and Molly (Vincent). Surviving grandchildren are Emma, Leah, John, Grace, Sophia, Michael Galen, Vincent, Rory and Hailey. Hugh was a respected man in the community for his many successes as family-man, police officer, writer, athlete, coach, and one-of-a-kind personality. A thought-provoking and opinionated writer, U.E., passionately shared his views – published many times in the Atlantic City Press and TIME Magazine. He enjoyed debating politics and religion with anyone who would listen. He spent time at the old Blazers and “The Museum”. Hugh served with the NJ State Police as Trooper, Squad Leader, Traffic Officer and Station Commander, retiring as a Lieutenant after 26 years. He graduated from several competitive programs including: - U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp in Parris Island, SC – Honor Graduate 1962 - Valley Forge Military Academy 1958 - NJ State Police Academy 1965 - Northwestern University, School of Police Staff and Command 1986 - Rutgers University Management Program 1990 Wearing many uniforms with impeccable bearing, he also did his best staying fit. Recognized as “Member of the Month” multiple times where he lifted weights and did cardio. At home, his favorite was 20 minutes every day on the Nordick Track, for which he needed several replacements from heavy usage. He claims it kept him alive. As an athlete, U.E. spoke fondly of running track in high school, including a personal best 800 meter time of 2:08. At 6’ and 220 lbs, that is very respectable. He enjoyed spending his summers as a lifeguard for Cape May Beach Patrol from 1957-1960. Another highlight he spoke about was running in the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania. He most enjoyed football, including watching the Eagles with his family. As a player, he competed for Father Judge, St. Joe Prep, Valley Forge, Villanova, East Stroudsburg, Furman, and West Chester University. We joke that he played professional freshmen football. His character shined as a coach for his sons (at EHT) and his community (including Pleasantville Jokers), where he came up with many famous lines about life that his athletes remember fondly. Raise a glass and share a toast to the heart of the Herron Family - Tanqueray Gibson up cold and dry. A gathering will be held to celebrate Hugh’s life on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 12 Noon to 2 PM at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where memories and military honors will be shared at 2 PM. Rather than flowers, the family would greatly appreciate any memorial contribution be made to his autistic grandson’s future at www.gofundme.com/vinnybuddhalorenzi "Pogue Ma Hon .....Long Live Hughie"
