James Ashley Obituary

James Walter Ashley departed this life and went to his eternal reward on Sunday, August 21, 2011. He was born on June 5, 1952 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to James B. and Willa Ashley. At an early age, his family relocated to Mizpah, New Jersey. He was educated in the Hamilton Township School District and graduated from Oakcrest High School in 1968. In 1972, he met the love of his life, Sandra Lynn Adams, and they were united in marriage on April 29, 1972. This union was blessed with two daughters, and they shared thirty-eight years of marriage together. Butch, as he was known, was a loving father, husband, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was an integral part of his family, always helping and unselfishly giving of his time and energy. Butch was a jack of all trades and was gifted in many areas including carpentry and auto mechanics. He loved the water, and going fishing was a favorite pastime that he learned as a young boy. Butch also loved music and had a beautiful tenor voice, which he shared with his family and friends. He enjoyed Jazz and R&B, and could tell you the names and dates of hundreds of Oldies. He was baptized at an early age at First Holy United Pentecostal Church in Mizpah, New Jersey where his musical talents were nurtured as he played the piano. One of Butch’s greatest enjoyments was driving trucks, preferably eighteen wheelers. He began a lifelong career as a truck driver and became a master driver within a short period of time. His trucking career began at National Freight Company, and he was lastly employed by Leone Produce, Inc. in Vineland, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his father, James B. Ashley. Butch leaves to cherish his loving memory his faithful wife Sandra; daughters: Tawana L. Ashley-Seward and Virginia I Ashley; grandchildren Nolan and Tatyana Seward; and godson Trevon James Ashley-Chance. He is also survived by his mother Willa Ashley; a special uncle Daniel Jackson; sisters: Wanda Loatman, Brenda Ashley, Michelle (Roosevelt) Smith, and Shawn Ashley; brothers: Michele, Daniel, Anthony (Danielle), and Jonathan Ashley; sisters-in-law: Virginia Goodwin, Ramona (Samuel) White, Peggy (George) Ausby, Ina (William) Cowherd, Jr.; a special cousin Darlene Bey-Blocker, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends. A viewing will be held on Monday, August 29, 2011 from 9-1l AM at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 11 AM. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park in Mays Landing.
