John Daniel deVecchis Obituary

John Daniel deVecchis - 80 of Mays Landing passed away on May 8th surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness. John was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 14, 1937 and grew up in both Philadelphia and Brigantine, NJ. He graduated from Glassboro State College now known as Rowan University and was an educator in The Hamilton Township School District for 36 years. He will be remembered fondly by so many of his former students and colleagues. John also spent many summers working at The Atlantic City Race Course, a job he enjoyed so much as he loved working alongside his family and friends and taking care of “the cage.” After retirement he enjoyed many of his favorite activities like having daily coffee with his twin brother, doing his crossword puzzles, watching classic movies and cooking his dog, Sammie gourmet meals. He loved spending time at his pool in the summertime and he always made sure the young people were up on the latest technology and gadgets. Everyone always looked forward to his annual 4th of July pool party where John often served as the grill master under the direction of his twin brother Carl. John also always loved a good practical joke and will be remembered for his humor by some of his closest friends including The Anderson Family, The Hamilton Family, The Bird Family, The Pomatto Family and The McGonigal Family. John is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Barbara deVecchis, his sister Barbara Wallace, his brother Arthur deVecchis and his identical twin brother, Carl deVecchis. He is survived by his sweet dog Sammie who never left his side. He will be terribly missed by his immediate family; his sister in law Jeanne (Cavino) deVecchis, his nieces, Christine (Thomas) Kotansky and Sharon (Brian) Konowitz and his great nieces and nephews who he loved dearly, Donna Shuler, Jimmy and Danny Smith, Justin and Jonathan Mitchell, Thomas Kotansky, Jr. and Jenna and Jayce Konowitz. He will also be greatly missed by his brother in law Bob Wallace and sister in law Joan deVecchis along with his many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at The Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main Street, Mays Landing where friends and family may pay their respects on Monday, May 14th from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. On Tuesday, May 15th, friends and family may visit at St. Vincent DePaul Church, 5021 Harding Highway, Mays Landing from 10:00AM to 11:00AM and a Mass of the Christian Burial will be held following the viewing. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery immediately after Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Holy Redeemer Hospice/Atlantic County, 6550 Delilah Rd., Suite 501, Egg Harbor Twp., NJ 08234 and/or The Meals on Wheels Program of Atlantic County. Make checks payable to Atlantic Co. Intergenerational Services, 101 Shore Rd., Room 215, Northfield, NJ 08225 and designate on the check in memory of John deVecchis. These programs were invaluable in providing care and nourishment to John over the past two years. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Meals on Wheels volunteers and all the Holy Redeemer nurses and aides who cared for him over the past two years, especially his long-time nurse Sue Callahan, his hospice nurse Antoinette Ripley and aides, Ernest Jackson and Marsha Gray. In addition, we want to thank John’s nephew Father Joseph Wallace for his spiritual support.
