Joseph Champion

Joseph S. Champion, Sr., (81) of Egg Harbor Township, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2013. Joe was born on October 11, 1931 and was a life-long resident of Atlantic County. He was the son of the late Francis and Dorothy Champion. He proudly served seven years in the U.S. Army and returned home to work his way up to Production Control Supervisor for the Wheaton Plastics Company. He retired after 32 years of service. Joe was a member of Keystone Masonic Lodge #153 F&AM in Linwood where he served as Worshipful Master in 1968. Joe loved his family and friends, and his greatest joy was spending time with them. He was blessed to spend his later years with his bride, Alice, who shared his many passions and never left his side. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He shared this interest with his sons. Joe could often be found fishing on his boat or enjoying a day in the woods with his buddy “Champ”, his short-haired pointer. Joe’s grandchildren gave him much joy, and he attended many of their sporting events and activities. He rode motorcycles all his life and was a member of the Retreads Motorcycle Club. Joe is predeceased by his wife Judy (Weeks) and his brother David. He is survived by his loving wife Alice; his three sons: Joseph Jr. (Susan), James (Donna), and Paul (Sheri); a step-daughter Anne (Eric); and grandchildren: Stephanie, Nate, Molly, Kate, James Jr., Franklin, Linda, Paul Jr., Chase, and Sabrina, as well as sister-in-law Almeda Champion of Riverside, CA. A host of extended family and friends are left to cherish his memory. A viewing will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 10 AM until 12 Noon at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where Masonic services will be held at 12 Noon followed by a worship service and reflections. Burial with military honors will follow at the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Presbyterian Church of Mays Landing, 6001 Main St., Mays Landing, NJ 08330.
