Mary Elizabeth Cary (Bette), 97, of Mays Landing, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2014. Bette was born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1916. She graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1935. She married Joseph E. Carey and moved to the Atlantic City area, where they were very active with the JC’s, Miss America Pageant and Kiwanis Club. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and was treasurer of the PTA. When moving to Linwood, she began working for The Prudential Insurance Co. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and entertaining family and friends in her home. In 1982 she retired to North Fort Myers, FL until 2008 when she came home to be with her family. Bette is predeceased by her husband Joseph E. Carey, Sr. and by her son Joseph E. Carey, Jr. (Florence). She is survived by her daughter Barbara Carey Dickson (Richard); three grandsons: James B. Care, Jr. (Jen), Glenn Carey (Jen), and Matthew Carey (Lisa); one step-grandson Ronald Detrick (Andrea), one step granddaughter Laura Reynolds (Mark); and 11 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 19, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where family and friends may gather from 1-1:30 and a service will begin at 1:30.
