Mattie Washington

Mattie Washington 83- of Mizpah, passed from earth to Glory on Tuesday morning April 12, 2016 peacefully at home. Mattie was born on April 2, 1933 at home in Mizpah, NJ and was the only child of Ira and Helen DeFlanders. She was born, raised, and educated in Mizpah, NJ. She met and married her military pen pal, Freddie Washington, and from that union two daughters were born. She worked at Vineland Spatz Clothing Factory, Mizpah Coat Factory, and as a bus driver with George Hoenes until her retirement. After her retirement she was a committed volunteer at Mizpah Inland Human Services. Mattie was also a diligent member of St. John AME Zion church of Mizpah and was affectionately known as “Mother Mattie Washington”. She was the oldest living descendant of the founding members of the church. Mattie served over 30 years as a Missionary, 15 years as Lay Council President, choir member, and Deaconess. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Rev. Ethel H. Wade (Harry); three grandsons, Sheriff Officer Nathaniel Lewis (Cathy), Stephen Lewis, and Jason Lewis; three granddaughters, Sgt First Class Eugeneia Aikens (US Army), Omoanatse Agbugui, and Ilamosi Agbugui; three great grandsons, Devin Lewis, Oshogwe Agbugui, and Eze Agbugui; two great granddaughters, DiShayna Dennis and Alexia Lewis; several nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Freddie Washington, and a daughter, Carol DeFlanders-Lewis. Service will be conducted at St. John AME Zion Church, 6892 Sewell Ave., Mizpah at 11am on Friday April 22, 2016. Viewing from 9am to 11am. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to the Freddie and Mattie Washington Memorial Fund.
