Peter Fantacone Obituary

FANTACONE, Peter J., 93, of Mays Landing NJ, formerly of Bellmawr NJ, passed away on April 25, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Peter loved growing up in Manayunk, born in 1925 the son of Lawrence and Helen (nee Fortunato) Fantacone. Peter attended Roman Catholic High School and enlisted in the US Navy at 17 years of age. He graduated Saint Joseph’s University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and went on to enjoy a long career as a Purchasing Manager for Westinghouse Electric Corp. In 1952 he married the love of his life, Eva, and shared 60 wonderful years together, building a happy home with their four children Peter Jr., Marycay, Susan and Laurie. Peter was an honorable man, who loved God, family and his country. The man he was and the way he lived his life will always be something that his family will strive to emulate. Peter was a WWII US Navy D-Day veteran. He served aboard the LCI 492 that landed infantry troops in the first wave at Omaha Beach. He was “dedicated to keeping alive the memory of all those who died on D-Day.” This was an important mission to him and he went on to produce the DVD “D-Day in Memory of the Fallen.” Along with sharing his experiences with civic organizations, schools and universities, he was published in numerous newspapers and magazines, and was a mentor to many. He served as Lector at St. Vincent de Paul Church, tour-guide at the Battleship New Jersey and Atlantic County Veterans Museum, volunteer for the Literacy Program of America and the Better Business Bureau; and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and VFW. Peter was awarded France’s highest decoration, the Insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Preceded in death by Eva (nee Pallini), his beloved wife of 60 years. Peter is survived by his adoring children Peter Jr. (Ann), Marycay (Bryson) Sundberg, Susan (William Jr.) Norquist, Laurie (Chad) Hendrickson; proud PopPop of 9, and Great-PopPop of 10; dear brother of Mary Ann Shaw and Rita Schultz.
