Phylis Cortez Mays Landing, New Jersey Obituary

Phylis Cortez

Cortez, Phylis, peacefully went to be with the Lord surrounded with the comfort and prayers of her loving family on November 5, 2007. Phylis was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 17, 1943 as the youngest child to be born to the union of the late Bishop Walter and Irene Jackson. At a young age, the family moved to Mizpah. She was educated in the public school system. In 1962 Phylis was joined in holy matrimony to Carlos A. Cortez, Sr. To their union was born Carlisa, Carlos, and Teri. Phylis worked for many years as a Home Health Aid. For a short time in her mid-thirties she operated a home-based business creating custom-made dolls. She labored faithfully by her husband's side as they built and refurbished several homes in which they also resided. She loved hummingbirds and wind chimes. Some of her favorite pastimes were gardening, swimming, and spending time with her family. She was fondly known as "MomP" by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and "lady-bug" by her sister Willa. Phylis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Carlos A. Cortez, Sr., who went to be with the Lord on September 8, 2007. She leaves to cherish her memory many loved ones; their three children: Carlisa Wicks (son-in-law Tim Wicks), TSgt. Carlos A. Cortez, Jr. (daughter-in-law Beverly Cortez), Estea "Teri" Cortez-Abrams (son-in-law Joe Abrams); grandchildren: Carlos Wilkes, USMC, Melody Cortez, Jasmine Cortez, Kimberly Wicks, LaShonda Cortez, Jovan Abrams and Brittany Abrams; great-grandchildren: Emiyah Cortez and Emieer Cortez; one sister: Willa Mae Ashley; two brothers: Daniel Jackson and Edward McCants; sisters-in-law: Luvenia Watts, Lurena Jackson, Kate McCants, Eleuteria Ayala, Gloria Sanchez, Norma Soto, Ortencia Santiago, Elva Quesada, Lucy Barksdale, and Wilma Cortez; brothers-in-law: Narciso Cortez, Juan Sanchez, Fernand Quesada; and a large host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
