Burnham, Rebecca Poplar, 90, of Pleasantville, passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010 after a short illness. Rebecca, daughter of John Wattmore Poplar and Edith Walker, was born in Philadelphia, PA, on St. Patrick’s Day 1920 with the luck of the Irish and the gift of gab. She lived most of her life in Pleasantville where she graduated from high school in 1939. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from what is now Rowan University in 1946. Students and colleagues will remember Mrs. Burnham as a master in the art of teaching; she loved her work as a Kindergarten teacher in Northfield, Absecon, and taught for over 20 years at Leeds Avenue School in Pleasantville. Becky was well known on the Mainland for her beautiful singing voice and exuberant personality. She sang with the Sweet Adelines and with many different community church choirs. She was predeceased in 2002 by her husband Paul Burnham after 49 years of marriage. She passed away with loving members of her family at her side. She was devoted to her family, friends, and sharing the everyday joys of life. She meant the world to her family, leaves a legacy of cheer and love, and will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rebecca’s gregarious personality and wit made her a star among friends and a beloved teacher. Mrs. Burnham lived a long happy life and was truly unique and unforgettable. Those left to cherish her fine memories are her children Judith and Edith, her grandchildren James and Karen, her many nieces and nephews, and other family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation held on Sunday, from 4-7 PM and Monday from 10-11 AM at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 11 AM Monday.
