Sugrue, Rev. John Francis, 74, of Pleasantville, formerly of Mays Landing, passed away on March 2, 2012. Born in Offaly, Ireland, he was ordained to the priesthood at Cathedral Thurles in 1962. He came to the United States in the summer of 1962, with four other Irish Priests (includinig: Father William Quinn, Father Steve Carey, Father Joseph Manion, and the late Father Joseph Downing), on the last voyage of the Maritania, from Cobh in County Cork. He served as Parochial Vicar at Immaculate Conception in Bridgeton, St. Peter’s in Pleasantville (during which time he was also on the faculty at Holy Spirit High School), and St. Pius X in Cherry Hill. He also served as Pastor of St. Ann’s in Elmer and most recently at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Mays Landing, where he served for 27 years until his retirement in 2005. He lived his retirement at Villa Raffaella in Pleasantville. Father Sugrue is predeceased by his parents Michael and Josephine and his nephew John. He is survived by his siblings: Frances O’Donoghue, Thomas Sugrue, Brigid O’Sullivan, and Frank Sugrue; his nephews Michael and Frank, and his niece Michelle. Visitation for Father John Sugrue will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 5021 Harding Highway (next to Holy Cross Cemetery), on Wednesday, March 7 from 3-7 PM where the Mass of Jesus Christ the High Priest will be celebrated at 7 PM. A second visitation will be held on Thursday, March 8 from 9-10:15 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Ireland.
