Richard Benner

Richard B. Benner December 6th, 1936 - December 1st, 2018 ? - an Epitaph for one who was always finding what was ethical and true. Richard died after a brief illness; he was at home surrounded by loved ones. Richard was always searching, questioning, and reasoning—seeking knowledge with a boundless enthusiasm. He was an eternal student and eventually was able to share his passion by teaching at Atlantic Cape Community College as a professor of Philosophy and Religion. The 2004 recipient of the distinguished Lindback Award, Richard’s 22-year commitment to Atlantic Cape also included serving as the Arts and Humanities Department Chair, co-advisor for Phi Theta Kappa, chair of the Curriculum Committee, and Arts and Humanities Area Coordinator, in addition to many other roles. He volunteered to represent Atlantic Cape on the State General Education Committee. He was a member of Mensa, included in Who’s Who in America, and was published in Ethical Leadership in the Community College: Bridging Theory and Daily Practice, an achievement that ensures his teaching will continue to touch the future. Richard served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. After his military service, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Villanova University and a Master’s degree in Education from Florida State University. He pursued a Doctoral degree at University of Pennsylvania. Richard was born at Shore Medical Center (then Shore Memorial Hospital) and raised in Ocean City, NJ and most recently was living in Mays Landing. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Linda, with whom he shared many adventures - Ireland, hiking, sometimes with rattlesnakes or bears, discussing philosophy and existentialism, photography, and dinner parties. He also leaves behind daughters Cheryl (Edward) and Genevieve (Sharon) and his adoring grandchildren: Abigail, Sean, Amanda, Edward, and Brendan, Emily, and Jason. Services were private at the request of family.
