Virginia Cahill Obituary

Virginia May Cahill, "Bub" age 86, of Mays Landing, New Jersey died of heart failure on February 25, 2010 in the Royal Suites Health Care facility in Galloway, N.J. Virginia was born on October 21, 1923 in Sydney, Australia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Edward Rankin. She lived in Sydney where she attended Catholic elementary and secondary schools and was a communicant at the Church of the Holy Cross. She received a Business degree from St. Mary's College in Sydney and after graduation began work as a secretary. She loved to swim at Bondi Beach, walk through the public parks in Sydney with their many flowers and fountains, and attend movies and dances with her many friends and family. During World War II she met and married Stanley Cahill, of Mays Landing, who was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps stationed in the Pacific. She sailed to the United States aboard the S.S. Monterey in the spring of 1946 with many other war brides and their children eventually arriving in San Francisco. She then boarded a train that took her across country to her final destination of Atlantic City, N.J. where her husband was anxiously waiting to see her again after a separation of over a year. They settled in Mays Landing where her husband owned and operated a television and radio sales and service store. She assisted him with the business for many years until his death in 1976. After that time, she was employed by a number of other public and private businesses in Atlantic County until her retirement in 1986. Virginia was a long time parishioner of St. Vincent De Paul Church in Mays Landing where she was active in church activities. For many years she was also involved in the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society. Virginia loved to travel and visited her family in Australia a number of times, the most recent in August 2006. She was also an avid fan of both the Phillies and the Eagles and never missed an opportunity to watch one of their games. In addition, she continued to attend Oakcrest High School football games for a number of years and loved watching the marching band perform during the halftime ceremonies. Virginia is predeceased by her brother Jack Rankin. She is survived by her sister, Claire of Sydney, her brother Bernie and his wife, Diane of Sydney and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Australia; sons Stanley P. Cahill and his wife Gayle Sullivan of Salem, Massachusetts and Brian W. Cahill and his wife Kathy of Elwood, New Jersey; four grandchildren: Meagan (Jesse Frantz), Kirsten, Michael (Katherine), and Ryan Cahill; and two great granddaughters: Rory and Tessa Frantz and many caring friends and staff at Royal Suites. Memorial donations in her name may be made to Royal Suites Healthcare or the charity of your choice. Private services will be held by the family with burial in Union Cemetery.
