Nuss, Walter, 83, of Newfield, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2019 at Cooper Hospital. He was the son of the late Mary and Frank E. Nuss. After his military service, Walter worked at RCA in Camden as a Class 1 technician. In 1963, he then began to work as a field technician at Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Company until his retirement. Walter went to school for radio and television. By age 19, he was running trolley cars and also taught himself auto mechanics. He also started collecting phonograph records. Over the years he taught himself to play music such as Bass, Banjo and Guitar. Walter was a Mummer where he enjoyed playing the banjo. He had an ear for this type of music. He also played in a string band in Philadelphia and worked on the John Wannamaker Pipe Organ. He organized a 6-piece dance band and played in the service clubs. Around 1970 he rebuilt, restored and repaired merry-go-round band organs in the Wildwood , NJ Amusement Parks. He also enjoyed buying and selling antique cars. In the early 70’s, Walter was able to meet and establish a long friendship with one of his musical hero’s, J. Lawrence Cook, a notable arranger of over 20,000 jazz and ragtime piano rolls, many of which brought Walt great joy. He was an avid collector of mechanical musical instruments such as player pianos, nickelodeons, and band organs. In his earlier years, he owned and operated a business called Walt’s Player Piano Hospital where he repaired, restored, bought and sold these instruments. He also collected piano rolls and enjoyed sharing music with anyone who was in his company. Walter enjoyed trips to the New England especially the White Mountains, NH, and enjoyed camping with his family in earlier years. If there was a flea market or yard sale nearby, Walter was sure to be there. He loved to go to the Pine Barrens in New Jersey to swim and enjoy nature. He was a member of the South Jersey Post Card Club and US Stanley Steamers of America Club.
