Rita Zaberer

Zaberer, Rita Ann (Hurchik), 88, of Coconut Creek, FL, passed away on August 31, 2009. Born: July 27, 1921, in Philadelphia. Graduated West Chester State Teachers College and completed post graduate work at Temple University. Taught English and Music in the School District of Philadelphia. Married Charles N. Zaberer in 1955 and moved to Wildwood, New Jersey. In 1960 she and her family moved to Northfield, New Jersey. Rita and her husband opened Zaberers restaurant near Atlantic City in 1961. At its peak, the restaurant maintained over 350 employees. Mrs. Zaberer continued to operate the establishment until 1983. She also resided in Margate City, New Jersey, and eventually retired to Coconut Creek, Florida. Rita was actively involved in a myriad of business, professional, and charitable organizations throughout her life, and received a number of awards in recognition thereof, among them: former President of Atlantic County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Women’s Division of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce, and local chapter of Zonta International. She also served on the Board of Directors of Atlantic National Bank and Board of Trustees of The Atlantic City Convention Bureau. Mrs. Zaberer became the first woman to receive both Mainlander of the Year award and B’nai B’rith Civic Association Award, Atlantic City Chapter. Additionally, she was an active participant in Atlantic City-Puerto Rico Reciprocal Visitation Program, Betty Bacharach Women’s Auxiliary, March of Dimes, and NJ Resort and Travel and Hotel-Motel Associations. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles, who passed away in 1971. Rita is survived by her children: Francis, Christine Bland and Jon (Jack); her brother, John Hurchik; two grandsons: Jason and Brian; and her son in-law, David. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, September 11th, 11:00 AM, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 11 N. Kenyon Ave, Margate. Friends may call from 9:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to American Cancer Society, 626 N. Shore Road, Absecon, NJ 08201.
