Mario M. Cardinale, 96, of Whiting, N.J., passed away on Jan. 12, 2019. Visitation will be on Tues., Jan. 15 from 3-7 p.m. at Shook-Farmer Funeral Home, 45 Roseland Ave., Roseland, N.J. Services will begin on Wed., Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Roseland, with entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, N.J. Born in Newark to the late Michael and Palmina Cardinale, Mario lived in Newark’s First Ward. Along with his father and brother, Mario owned Cardinale Brothers Store on the corner of Park Ave. and Cutler St. He met the love of his life, Marie Caroscio, whom he married and began to raise a family. He then became a Correction’s Officer for the County of Essex, and moved to Fairfield, N.J. He reached the rank of Sergeant prior to his retirement.
He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps during World War II, serving in the Philippines. He was a member of the V.F.W. Old Guard, Post #7925, Whiting.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marie, and siblings, Yolanda “Dolly” Capasso and Dante Cardinale. Surviving are his devoted sons, Michael, and his wife, Dolores “Dee”, Mario, and his wife, Mary Pat, and Anthony, and his wife Dawn. He was blessed with 10 cherished grandchildren, Dana, Joseph, Daniel, Caitlin, Michael, Anthony, Brianna, Jonathan, Michael and Gina, and 6 loving great-grandchildren, Alessa, Vienna, Sela, Branson, Justin, and Nicky. He also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to his devoted caretaker, Dorrett Edwards, who made Mario’s last year on Earth comfortable and loving.
