Sr Jeanne Celeste Keaveny

KEAVENY Sister Jeanne Celeste, CSJP, (aka) Margaret Mary Keaveny, died peacefully at St. Michael Villa Infirmary on Thursday, October 8, 2015. She was born on May 28, 1920 in Glenmaddy, County Galway, Ireland, to the late Thomas Keaveny and Sabina (Rattigan) Keaveny. She was received into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Cabra, Ireland, on September 8, 1936 and pronounced final vows there on September 8, 1941. A graduate of Seton Hall University, B.A. Education and Guidance and Villanova University, Masters in Education, Sr. Jeanne served in the field of Catholic school education at St. Luke’s, Ho-Ho-Kus; St. James, Penns Grove; and St. Genevieve’s in Van Nuys, CA. In 1962, she was chosen to serve as Provincial Superior for the St. Joseph Province until 1968. She founded the Peace and Justice Center at Englewood Cliffs Colle; and served at the Inter-community Center for Justice and Peace in New York City. Other ministries include counseling and chaplaincy services at St. Francis Hospital, Jersey City; Rachel House, Washington, DC; and Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD. St. Jeanne was pre-deceased by her sister Theresa McGrath and Mary Finnerty and Annie Keaveney and brothers Malachy and Tom. She is survived by her brother Johnny in England and sister Sabina Lynch Nyack, NY. Sister-in-law Carmel Keavaney of Glenamaddy, Ireland and brother-in-laws John Lynch of Nyack, NY and Peter Finnerty of Sligo, Ireland Visiting hours at St. Michael Villa, Englewood Cliffs, NJ on Sunday, October 11, from 2-7 PM. Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Michael Villa Chapel on Monday, October 12 at 9:30 AM. Arrangements are by Angelo G. Mania, Rutherford, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, Shalom Center, 399 Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632
