Eva Shalayda Obituary

Eva (Prozeralik) Shalayda, 98, of South Seaside Park, NJ passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Complete Care at Bey Lea in Toms River, NJ. Eva was born in Alden, PA to Metro and Pearl (Kotyk) Prozeralik. Eva and her nine siblings grew up in Pennsylvania and worked hard from a young age to support the family after their father’s death due to a coal mining accident. Eva married Nicholas Shalayda on July 31, 1941 and moved to Milltown, NJ where they raised their son Eugene “Gene” Shalayda. Eva & Nicholas subsequently moved to the Niagara Falls, NY area to help her brothers and sisters in numerous family businesses which included a famous steakhouse (John’s Flaming Hearth) and the Hotel Niagara. Eva returned to South Seaside Park, NJ during 2011 to live with her son Gene and his family. Eva was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes in Milltown, NJ, St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Niagara Falls, NY and St. Catharine of Siena Church in Seaside Park, NJ. Eva enjoyed spending time with family and was talented in the art of “Pysanka” (decorated Easter eggs in the Ukrainian tradition.) Eva is predeceased by her beloved husband Nicholas, her loving son Gene, parents Metro and Pearl (Kotyk), brothers Nick, John & Mike, and sisters Mary, Ann, Helen, Betty & Pauline. Eva is survived by her grandchildren Karen Zavaglia (Louis), Thomas Shalayda (Kimberly), Richard Shalayda and six great grandchildren. Eva is also survived by her brother Fred Prozeralik, daughter-in-law Janet (Long) Shalayda and numerous nieces & nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, August 30, 2019 from 9:30 to 10:30am at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 809 Central Ave., Seaside Park, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 11:00am at St. Catharine of Siena Church (The Parish of St. Junipero Serra) in Seaside Park, NJ. A Committal Service will be offered on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11am at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 500 Riverdale Ave, Lewiston, NY.
