Lillian Minch Somerset, New Jersey Obituary

Lillian Minch

Lillian Minch Somerset Loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt; long time Avenel resident Lillian Minch passed away on Saturday September 14 at the Parker at Somerset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at almost 94 years old. Lillian and her husband Eddie were inseparable for nearly 65 years of marriage up until his passing in 2012. After moving from Jersey City, the hard-working couple raised their two boys in Avenel where they lived for a total of 45 years. Lillian was a huge sports fan whose cheering could be heard at many of her children’s and grandson’s football and baseball games. She loved baseball and was originally a NY Giants and Willie Mays fan before adopting the Mets. In later years, she jumped on the Yankees bandwagon, a deed for which her son has forgiven her. Although a first generation Ukrainian, Lillian made the best spaghetti sauce and eggplant parmigiana! Her holiday dinners were legendary and always included Ukrainian kielbasa and kapusta. Lillian and Eddie moved to Cedar Glenn Lakes in Whiting in 2006. When her health deteriorated in early 2018, she became a resident at Parker at Somerset. Lillian thrived in all aspects at Parker where she engaged in numerous social activities and developed true loving bonds with both residents and their exceptionally dedicated staff members. With their care, she maintained her sharp mind and wit up until her last breaths. She was a devout Catholic being a parishioner at St. Andrews Church in Avenel for many years and later at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Whiting. Lillian and Eddie were active members of the Colonia Seniors AARP chapter and were long time volunteers for Meals on Wheels. She was employed by L’Oréal in Clark for many years where for a time she served as union shop steward putting her feisty spirit to good use. Mrs. Minch was predeceased by her parents Stefan and Petrina and siblings Thomas and John Laszok and Dorothy Ambrose. She is survived by her son Gordon, wife Cecilia and granddaughter Tori of Toms River; son, Edward and wife Daryl of Califon and grandson Jason of Hawthorne and her beloved niece MaryJane Ambrose-Kajon and her husband Frank of Rutherford and their children Jacqueline and Joseph. Visiting will be held on Tuesday September 17, 2019 from 5-8 at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset. Services will begin on Wednesday at 8:30 AM at the Gleason Funeral Home followed by a 9 AM funeral mass at St. Matthias Church in Somerset. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington. Contributions in Mrs. Minch’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org or the charity of your choice.
