Donald Loehwing Obituary

Donald L. Loehwing, 86, passed away on June 11, 2012 in Brick. Born in Oak Park, Illinois to the late Lester and Theresa (Murray) Loehwing, he lived most of his life in Jersey City. Mr. Loehwing served his country in the U.S. Army, Company F 22nd Infantry, during World War II. He bravely fought during the Battle of the Bulge and suffered injury during combat and was honorably discharged in 1944. A humbly decorated veteran, Donald was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944, and also obtained the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Batch 1st Award, European African Middle Eastern Campaign with Bronze Battle Star. Mr. Loehwing joined the Jersey City Police Department in 1960 and after thirty years of service, retired as Lieutenant in 1990. He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and served as Sergeant at Arms for the Jersey City Police Superior Officers Association. Donald was an avid golfer and handball player who enjoyed traveling and quality time spent with his beloved family. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Helen Loehwing in 1992. Surviving are his loving children, son John Loehwing and wife Carolyn, and daughter Donna E. Garigliano and husband Vincent, both of Brick. Also surviving are his sister, Gladys Sopher of Toms River, his brother Richard Loehwing of East Hanover, his two cherished grandchildren, Dana Lynette Garigliano and Donnie Loehwing, his two dear cousins June Miller of Toms River and Elizabeth Ward of Machester, and his pride and joy, his great-grandson, Vincent Cooper of Brick. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. Funeral services will begin with a prayer at 10:15AM on Friday, June 15th at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00AM at St. Martha R.C. Church, Point Pleasant. Private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s memory to the American Humane Society against the cruelty of animals.
