Obituary for Stephen P. Maher

Stephen P. Maher, 90, of Waldwick and formerly of Midland Park, NJ, Ridgewood, NJ, and Brooklyn, NY, died on April 20, 2011 at The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, NJ. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen C. Maher in 2000 and his grandson, Kevin Maher, Jr. in 2006. He is survived by his five children and their spouses: Stephen P. Jr. and his wife Barbara of Florida, NY, Kevin and his wife Virginia of Wurtsboro, NY, Kathleen and her husband Francis Mulgrew of Monroe, NY, Walter J. and his wife Kathleen of Fair Lawn, NJ and Dorothy and her husband James Krause of Mahwah, NJ. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Prior to his retirement in 1984, he was the Administrator of the Master Mates & Pilots Benefit Plans and played an important part in the development of MM&P Training Facility located in Linthicum Heights, MD. A WWII Merchant Marine Veteran, Stephen was awarded the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Middle East and Pacific War Zone Bars and the Combat Bar with Stars. He was instrumental in the formation of the Dennis A. Roland Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans and was a member of the American Legion, Post 130, in Midland Park, NJ. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 8:45 AM from the Vander Plaat Funeral Home (www.vpfh.com), 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, NJ. Funeral mass will follow at 9:30 AM from Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect Street, Midland Park, NJ. Interment will be in Christ the King Cemetery in Franklin Lakes, NJ. Visiting is Monday, April 25, 2011, 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Waldwick Volunteer Ambulance Corps., 20 Whites Lane, Waldwick, NJ 07463 or Eva’s Kitchen, 393 Main St., Paterson, NJ 07501.
