Florence D. Collins, 105, formerly 37 Pulaski Street, Amsterdam, NY, passed away Saturday April 8, 2017 at The Quincy Home in Quincy, PA. Born in Amsterdam, NY on October 20.1911, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Pelagia Lulkowska Dabrowski. Florence received her education in the Amsterdam school system and was a graduate of Amsterdam High School, Class of 1930. She also received her Teaching Certificate from Oneonta Normal School. Mrs. Collins was an elementary school teacher for the Greater Amsterdam School District, where she taught for forty years at the Vrooman Avenue School, retiring in 1976.She was a pioneer in education, being featured on WRGB TV “Ding Dong School” in the mid 50’s, and received many testimonials for her creative teaching methods. She was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers and Amsterdam Retired Teachers Associations, a life member of the NYS Parent Teachers Association, Friends of the Amsterdam Free Library, Walter Elwood Museum and a former member of the Polish National Alliance, The Century Club and the Sassafras Bird Club. Her first husband, Henry T. Page, who she married on June 28, 1939, passed away March 7, 1943. Her second husband, Andrew B. Collins, who she married on March 21, 1951, passed away on June 16, 1999. Florence is survived by her son, David A. Collins, MD and his wife, Rosetta Mora of Waynesboro. PA., three grandchildren, Margaret M. Collins, MD, Mary-Katharine M. Collins, MD and Andrew Bryan Collins. Three nieces also survive, Constance DuCanto, Leah Lee and Cynthia Dabrowski Florence was predeceased by one brother, Leon T. Dabrowski, two sisters, Lillian I. Hoffman and Winifred Davis Funeral services will be held Friday morning April 14, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY, with visitation continuing until 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY. Memorial gifts in Florence’s name may be made to Sarah Jane Sanford Home, 69 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
