Mary M. (Matusik, Blakeley, Newton) Dunkle, of Liberty St., Arcade, died Tuesday July 4, 2017 in Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home, Springville at the age of 99. She was born February 15, 1918 in Arcade a daughter of the late Joseph and Marya (nee Stando) Matusik. She received her Bachelor's Degree in education from Buffalo State Teachers College in June, 1938 and later took graduate courses from St. Bonaventure University, Cornell University, University of Buffalo, Ithaca College, Houghton College, Fredonia State, Geneseo State and Canisius College. She taught in public schools for 35 years, beginning her teaching career in Sheldon District #9 in Humphrey Hollow (near what is now Byrncliff) teaching there for 2 years, she then taught one year in Arcade District #1 (Punkshire) and was then asked to teach at Arcade Central School where she remained until her retirement. She was a member and past-president of Beta Gamma - the Wyoming County Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Womens International Honorary Society. She was a lifelong member of SS Peter and Paul Church (now St. Mary's) in Arcade. She had served as Parish Council President, Womens Guild President and Altar & Rosary Society President and was appointed the first woman Eucharistic minister and lector. She introduced the idea into the parish of having funeral breakfasts for families of the deceased. She helped Msgr. Meloch and Charles Dunkle bring the wooden carving of "The Last Supper" into the church where it is inserted into the main altar. The three had carried it in three sections from Poland where Msgr Meloch had purchased it. She taught grades 1-8 on Sundays after the 8:30 am Mass and taught religious education to 5th and 6th grade students during religious release time in the late 1960's - 1980's at the Arcade Elementary School. For all of her work and dedication to her church she was awarded the St. Joseph the Worker Award. Surviving are many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands - Earl Blakeley, Richard Newton and Charles Dunkle; and her siblings - Cecelia Pawlowski, Joseph Matusik, Kazmeria Troutman, Stefania "Stella" Horm, Frank Dziedzic, and Tofil Dziedzic. Friends may call Friday July 7, 2017 from 4-7 pm at W. S. Davis Funeral Home, Inc., 358 W. Main St., Arcade. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday July 8, 2017 at 10 am in St. Mary's Church, 417 Main St., Arcade. Burial will be in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Arcade. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or the Arcade Rescue Squad, PO Box 303, Arcade, NY 14009.
