James Joseph Murphy Obituary

Greenwich James J. Murphy, 82, passed away Saturday April 30, 2016 at Fort Hudson Nursing Home with his loving family by his side. Born September 23, 1933 he was the son of the late Owen and Rose (Nolan) Murphy. He attended Greenwich high school. After high school he proudly served our country in the United States Army 59th infantry serving in both Korea and Japan. He was a long time employee of Stevens & Thompson Paper mill in Greenwich, Agway in Greenwich, he retired from Greenwich Central School and in retirement he enjoyed being a crossing guard during the school year. On August 18, 1957 he married the love of his life Carole Murphy at St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls by Father John Falcon. James enjoyed woodworking in his shop, loved coaching baseball for 25 years, spending time with his family especially during the holidays. He and his friend Gerald Bulger were instrumental at building the VFW Memorial Little League Fields. In May 2003 he was inducted into Greenwich Little League Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member & past commander of Greenwich VFW post 7291 and a longtime member of Greenwich American Legion post 515. In addition to his parents James is predeceased by his daughter-in-law who was like a daughter, Stacey J. Murphy; and several brother and sister-in-laws. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years Carole Murphy; his sons, James J Murphy Jr. and Phillip J Murphy both of Greenwich; his daughter, Laurie L Carlson and her husband James of Greenwich; step-granddaughter, Erika Cuevas and her husband Nolan of Shushan; brother, John Norman and his wife Hope of Gansevoort; his cousins, Mary Skellie and Catherine Loveland; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. At James request there will be no calling hours. Graveside Services with full military honors will be conducted on Friday May 6, 2016 at 10:30a.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery 200 Duell Rd, Schuylerville, NY 12871 A reception following Saratoga National at the Greenwich American Legion. Donations in James’s memory can be made to Greenwich Little League or Easton Greenwich Rescue P.O. Box 84, Greenwich, NY 12834 or Greenwich Fire Department 6 Academy St, Greenwich, NY 12834.
