George Iocolano Obituary

Auburn attorney George Iocolano, 93, a lifelong Auburn resident, passed away peacefully Friday, September 8 at the Sussman Palliative Care Unit of Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester of complications following a stroke. After serving in the Army Air Corps in 1943, Iocolano attended Syracuse University and Albany Law School. He has practiced law in Auburn since then. He was well-known for his athletic and philanthropic activities, was awarded a Letterman of Distinction from Syracuse University, and was recently inducted into the Auburn Sports Hall of Fame. He played baseball while in Army training and at Syracuse, and played in the Auburn softball leagues for many years. During an informal game at law school, his hitting prowess, he claimed, may have impressed the faculty sufficiently to help him avoid the 60 percent first-year-class attrition that prevailed at the time. He was a founding member of the Skaneateles Ski Club. In the 1970s and 1980s he was an avid runner, completing numerous races, including the Boston and New York Marathons. He climbed Mt. Rainier and climbed-skied Mt. Washington and Tuckerman's Ravine. He played tennis well into his 70's, and was a one-time winner of the Cayuga County Tennis Tournament. Due to a bequest to Syracuse University he helped arrange with his lifelong friend William Petty, the Iocolano-Petty Football Wing was named in their honor. The gift also benefitted the university's Bird Library. He was a longtime supporter of the Seymour Library and the YMCA in Auburn. Recently, he lent support to help bring the Adams Foundation piano recital series to Auburn. He is survived by his sons, Mark (Diane) and David Iocolano, his grandson Alex Iocolano, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia (Ginny) Scolaro Iocolano, his parents Michael and Mary Locastro Iocolano and his siblings Emmanuel (Derby), Vincenta, Rose, Onofrio (Joe Thomas), Joseph (Tuffy), Laura, Lucy, Concetta (Chetty), Katherine, and Anthony (Nino). Calling hours for Mr. Iocolano will be at the Plis Funeral Home, 220 State St., Auburn from 4-7 pm on Monday Sept. 11. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Auburn on Tuesday Sept. 12 at noon. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Seymour Library 176 Genesee St. Auburn, NY 13021. Or seymourlibrary.org/support-the-library/. In memory of Mr. Iocolano
