Lucille Gaskill Obituary

On March 24, 1925, Lucille Pauline, the beloved and only child of Harold Edward (Ned) and Lillian (Hazel) Logan, was welcomed into the world. Friends and neighbors in Hamden, Connecticut saw the three of them walking everywhere, enjoying each other’s company. In a few short years, the Great Depression began which heralded a challenging chapter in her life as in so many others. Some say her life-long habit of thriftiness came from this time. Lucille was an excellent student. She graduated from the Dixwell Avenue School in 1939, 1 of 3 honor roll students, and from New Haven Commercial High School in 1943, with an Honors Diploma given to four year honor students. She was 14th in her class of 493 students. Lucille could have attended college then, if circumstances had permitted. Later in life, she received an Associate Degree in Business from Adelphi University, something that pleased her very much. After high school, Lucille had a job selling tickets at the Lyric Theatre. One day her friend, Billy, came to the theatre with his friend, Milton Gaskill. This Brooklyn, NY guy had on a "bebop" hat and was considered a big deal. Lucille saw him the next time at the Goffee Spa where people went for franks and coffee. The rest, as they say, is history. They were married in New Haven, CT on May 12 1945, 11 months after Milton enlisted in the Navy. When he was discharged in 1946, they moved to New York. Terry Milton was born the next year and Donna Lucille the year after that. While in NYC, both Milton and Lucille worked for the US Post Office, Milton the day shift and Lucille the evening shift. In 1955, they moved to Uniondale, New York where the family was raised. Lucille began working for the New York State Unemployment Office where she worked for over 30 years. Her intelligence, skills, and ability to work well with others led to her becoming a supervisor of not only people in her office, but in other offices as well. She loved to travel. With her husband, family, and friends, Lucille journeyed, toured, and voyaged to many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and North America. Favorite trips included Jazz Festivals and Summer Olympic Games. They had fabulous adventures while enjoying and learning about many cultures. Of course, Lucille brought back many treasured mementos from her travels. Lucille was a devout Christian, who prayed, talked to God, and read her bibles daily. As an avid reader, she read multiple books at the same time. Lucille kept her hands busy creating Christmas ornaments, decorations, throws, and quilts. Lucille loved to talk on the telephone or as she would say have a visit by phone. She often told people to enjoy life. There was nothing Lucille liked better than an interesting conversation with a good (or new) friend. She would have engaging conversations with everyone. Lucille moved to Virginia in 2004. Over time, her health diminished and she endured open heart surgery, among other ailments. Her attitude was joyful and appreciative to the end. Lucille celebrated her 96th birthday on March 24, 2021. Lucille is survived by her son Terry, daughter-in-law Carol Daddazio, daughter Donna, and son-in-law David Jeffries. She has two grandchildren, Lauren Bynum (Keenan) and Logan Gaskill. She has two great grandchildren, William Bynum, age nine and Ella Bynum, age six. She is also survived by her life daughter Deborah Donable, and her loving godchildren Patricia Hall , Marc Scott, and Crystal Williams. She leaves many beloved cousins and life-long friends. The family will receive friends Monday May 3, 2021 from 9-11 AM at Cecere Family Funeral Home 2283 Grand Ave. Baldwin, NY 11510. Funeral service 11 AM in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY following the service.
