George K. Vrooman, 95, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was born on September 1, 1918 and was the son of the late Jacob and Caroline (Sauter) Vrooman. He was the husband of the late Charlina “Scotty” Nicol Vrooman. George was raised in Ballston Lake, NY and graduated from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Siena College and later his MS in Library Science from the University at Albany. He proudly served with the US Navy during World War II from 1944 until 1946 and was honorably discharged. George worked for 24 years in various engineering positions at ALCO in Schenectady, NY. In 1961 George went on to the Watervliet Arsenal until his deserved retirement in 1981 as Chief Technical Librarian. In 1964, George was asked by the Army to serve as a librarian for the World’s Fair in Flushing, NY where he shared with the public one of the first applications for computerizing library operations. George was a committed volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York. He was a member of the Shenendehowa Senior Citizens, AARP and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was also a trained Ombudsman and served as an advocate to nursing home residents in the Schuyler Ridge Residential Health Care in Clifton Park, NY. George loved to fish, golf and bowl. He was most happy with companion of 18 years, Leslie B. Carlmark of Clifton Park, NY.
He was the devoted father of Donald (Joyce) Vrooman of Timonium, MD, Barbara (John) Beaulieu of Chesapeake, VA and Beth (Gerry) Hoffman of Gettysburg, PA; caring brother of Dorothy (Bob) Frederick of Schenectady and the late Barry (Helen) Vrooman. George was the loving grandfather to five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His is also survived and admired by Leslie’s four children and four grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at the Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY 12019 at 2:00 PM.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment with full military honors will be held in Evergreen Memorial Park, Schenectady, NY on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter, 6010 County Farm Road, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.
