Obituary for Harvey Handel

Harvey Handel, 94, of 76 Middle Line Road, died peacefully on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Glendale Nursing home in Glenville, NY. He was born on August 31, 1921 in Queens, NY and was the son of the late Joseph and Henrietta (Miller) Handel. He served as a Seabee with the US. Navy during World War II and received the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal.
Following the war, Mr. Handel graduated from SUNY Oswego, where he met the love of his life, Ellen Christensen Handel. They were married in 1947 and had five children.
Mr. Handel devoted much of his life to public education. He earned a Master’s degree in Education at Columbia University Teachers College. He taught at Nott Terrace and Mont Pleasant High Schools, served as the Principal of Oneida Junior High School in Schenectady, founded the Schenectady Science and Arts Camp for gifted children, and later became the Superintendent of the Schalmont Central School District. Following his retirement from Schalmont, he served as a Vice President at the Schenectady Trust Company, and then became Executive Director of the Mohawk Pathways Girl Scout Council. He was an active member and past President of Schenectady Rotary.
Over the course of many decades Mr. Handel restored a colonial era farmhouse in Ballston Spa, and created beautiful park-like grounds. He was an avid gardener and a life-long Yankee fan.
Mr. Handel was a loving father and grandfather who took great pride in his children Christine (Mitch) Miller of New York, NY, Eric (Bea) Handel of Ballston Spa, NY, Gary (Laurie Villani) Handel of Stanfordville, NY, Karen (Glenn) Johnson of Port Matilda, PA and Thomas (Paul Mickens) Handel of Westborough, MA and his grandchildren Ben, Dan, Stephen, John Eric, Leah, Elizabeth and Lilly. He will be dearly missed.
With respect for the family’s wishes, all services will be held privately. He will be interred in the family lot at Parkview Cemetery, Schenectady, NY.
