Lewis H. Clarke, a brilliant scholar and educator departed this life on Friday, December 14, 2018.
He was born to Rev. Lewis Clarke and Mrs. Caroline Clarke. He grew up in Harlem New York and attended Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, where he excelled academically, played varsity football and was a member of the wrestling team.
He attended Brooklyn College, was a member of the Ralph Bunche Society, joined Omega Psi Phi, played football and eventually married Helen Nichols. He graduated, became a biology teacher and then Dean at Charles Evans Hughes High School. He received his Masters Degree from New York University and became a Biology and Chemistry Professor at New York University. He then became the Director of the HEOP program at NYU, which was one of the first HEOP Programs in NY State. He was elevated to serve as Dean at SUNY Old Westbury College for many years.
In the 1980’s he was further elevated when he became Executive Secretary at the State Level overseeing all SUNY Colleges for NY State’s Education Department, where he also worked for the Division of Professional Licensing. Many Ophthalmologists and Veterinarians found his signature on their professional licenses.
He retired from New York State service in 1990s to assist his elderly relatives, consult part-time, travel, scuba dive, play tennis and spend time with family. In 2006 he became a part-time Professor and Student Advisor at Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he eventually served as Interim Dean. He also worked as a consultant with the Geiger Gibson Center, the Black Ministerial Alliance and other smaller clients, until his second retirement in 2013.
Lewis Clarke is survived by his children Dr. Carol Clarke, Jeannine Clarke and Lewis Clarke III (wife Amelia Clarke); and grandchildren Lewis Clarke and Jordyn Clarke; and a host of loving relatives, colleagues and friends.
